Experienced, multi-sector Finance Director with a track-record of “keeping it simple” to help businesses achieve extraordinary results
With over 20 years’ experience in Board-level Finance leadership posts, Tim is a resolutely commercial FD with a focus on showing the value of people, assets, and processes, using business reporting to deliver improved bottom-line results, and constantly asking what the business could and should do differently to achieve better outcomes. Working across many different sectors – including business consultancy, biosciences, cybersecurity, engineering, pharma, print and packaging, and retail, amongst others – Tim has built a reputation for listening before talking, encouraging teams to run with new ideas, embracing learnings, and welcoming constructive criticism. Determined to keep things simple, so that they can be articulated effectively at every level of the organisation and to external stakeholders (bankers, lenders, investors), Tim has nonetheless successfully led, and secured support for, complex Finance activities, including systems and management reporting optimisation, fund raising, change management, pay and pension negotiations, and mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Tim is also constantly resolved to get to the bottom of what’s not working – rather than accept the easiest explanation for it – and to identify where unseen risk and opportunity lie, thus preventing businesses from taking decisions that not only fail to add value but cost unnecessary time and money.
Experience
Tim’s experience spans private equity-backed companies, larger group businesses, and established international brands, so he is equally practised leading organisations through periods of high growth, rapid change, turnaround, and steady-state activity.
His career has seen him succeed in challenges as diverse as leading multiple merger and acquisition transactions simultaneously, dramatically reducing overheads and increasing cash availability through better procurement processes and rapid fund raising, and negotiating with unions and pension providers to stop damaging strike action and adverse publicity – and much more besides.
Critical to Tim’s track record of success is his strong belief in continuous improvement, and his conviction that by taking the first step decisively and openly, and freely discussing it with those around him, his peers adopt and benefit from the same positive behaviours.
Over more than 20 years, Tim has led and managed, amongst other successes:

Rapid group expansion – Creating a network of 21 mixed retail outlets with revenues of £24 million, through simultaneous, rapid acquisitions, the raising of additional funding, and the release of £1 million headroom through renegotiation of suppliers’ payment terms.

Multi-million-pound investment – Preparing due diligence and investor committee reports for fund investment in a home improvements manufacturing business, resulting in a successful £13 million investment outcome.

Smarter financial modelling – Demonstrating that, contrary to the business’s perceptions, £10 million of additional equity value could be realised for a relatively much smaller amount of external debt funding.

Major transactions – Leading M&A and MBO activity to deliver improved outcomes for the businesses concerned, raising millions in working capital, and debt and equity funding to finance expansion.
